According to Hillbilly: The real story on the History Channel, the term originated about 100-200 years ago in West Virginia when there was a labor union battle between two coal mine businesses in a particular area and a group of them were red bandanas around their necks, they were big fighters for their cause.

Otherwise, redneck basically is interchangable with the term hillbilly and hick.

The term Red Neck as relating to Americans living in rural areas comes from the fact that if you work outside all year round in all weathers the back of your neck eventually becomes a dark reddish brown colour with a 'leathery' look to the skin - you literally develop a 'red-neck'.

The term originated from the sunburned necks of fair-skinned plowing farmers in the South--a derisive nickname given them sometime in the 1940s.

Red neck is what they would call a farmer who was out in the sun all day with his t-shirt on with a v neck. When he undressed in the evening he had a red neck where the shirt didn't cover his neck ........... A farmers tan is when a farmer is out in the sun all the time with his hat on and his face gets a dark tan. But when he takes his hat off his forehead is snow white !!! ... lol

I've always heard (and believed) that it's because they worked in the sun all day, plowing and planting and picking, and their necks were exposed to the sun while they worked bent over.
