My 9 month old daughter began having cold-like symptoms yesterday. It started out with a runny nose (clear drainage) and a little cough, but no fever. Now today she still has the runny nose along with a fever. The highest it has gotten is 102.6. Using Motrin brought it down to 100.1. But then after the Mortrin wore off it was back up to 102. Should I continue with the Motrin? What can I do to help her stuffy nose? At what point do you call the pediatrician? This is the first time she's ever had a cold or fever, and I'm not sure what the general rules are. She doesn't seem to be bothered much though. She's playing like normal, she's just a little more sleepy. A friend told me that you really don't have to call the doc unless it's 103 or 104 or if it won't go down with tylenol or motrin. Any suggestions?

A fever that doesnt stay down with tylenol or motrin, a lethargic baby, and a rash on the trunk are signs of concern.

A baby can have a fever of 102 and its not really considered a fever in a body that small. Fevers are an infants (or any child) main defense. They burn through viruses. What would normally be very dangerous for us, in the world of fevers, isnt to them.

So long as she's eating, she's not lethargic (sleepy is normal with colds, but not being able to wake a child is NOT) and she's not got spots on her trunk she's okay.

I would alternate with tylenol one dose, and the mortin the next. Its the best way to deal with baby fevers. Its okay that her fever goes back up when she's not on it, thats normal. If her fever gets up to 104 you need to take her in to the ER. Anything over that is considered dangerous (an adult would be knocked out and unconcious with a fever that high, an infant will not be.), if it does get that high, take her clothes off, keep her wet and drive her to the ER.

Beyond that, just watch her. These are the classic signs of everything from the common cold to staph. Until it reaches a different level there is no reaction for it, beyond fever reducers.

Roseola is common at this age, and its going around. Its a virus that acts just like this. A little bit of a mild cold symptom, a low fever, which peaks VERY HIGH after 3-7 days, and then comes down and breaks. AFTER the fever, literally within a couple hours of it breaking your baby breaks out in a rash all over the trunk, back, and head. Its not a dangerous illness, and once they get it its over, they never get it again.

The other answers are true also, a lot of babies teethe like this. With a low fever and runny nose.

Continue Motrin and monitor fever. Not necessary to consult Pedi till 103 or 104 at peak. Tepid bath for more than 20 min. Body does not lose heat before 20 min. Tepid; a few degrees below your childs temp. Too many people make the bath luke warm. The baby will shiver raising the temp. Climb in bath with baby if need be. Humidifier and raise the head of crib by placing pillow under mattress to give slight elevation. Too much elevation and baby will end up at bottom of crib. Cold meds not recommended for this age. Be more concerned if vomiting or fluid intake is very low both can cause dehydration. Also watch for change in nasal discharge if green or yellow viral or bacterial infection is present. The average cold for a baby lasts three weeks and they get an average of six colds between the fall to spring season do the math. This is the average for a stay at home child as well as a daycare child. Sounds like she is fine for the moment.

Is there something cold that he could at least chew on for the teeth? That would help numb his gums. But, I think that it would aide (not rid him of the fever), in cooling him down a bit. Also, hold him and cuddle him as much as possible. Nothing feels better than a mother's love. For the congestion, have you tried saline drops? Also, constantly use a nose aspirator (he won't like it but it will help). Good luck - I'm not there quite yet with my little guy, but cold season is fast approaching so it will only be a matter of time.

My daughter is the same age. She all of a sudden had a really blocked nose and had a high fever. I used saline drops for her nose and gave her panadol ( i am in Australia ). Take her to the doctors and see what they say. Also another suggestion. Is she just getting teeth? After my daughter got these symptoms two teeth popped up. Just a suggestion, if not take her to the doctor.

Keep her fever down tonight with Motrin. She might feel better with some steam this evening.

I would take her in tomorrow, but keep her more comfortable by keeping her fever down tonight.

It is scary to be a mom, but cuddle her and see if she'll drink some. If it spikes in the night, just take her to the ER. With constant Motrin, it may be controlled.

If it were me, I would continue with the motrin overnight. In the morning, I would take her to the doctor, just in case it's her ears. You can use saline drops and suction for the nose if it really bothers her. Good luck.

I was told to call the doc at 100. I would go to the doc tomorrow and see what they say because it can be pneumonia.
