Ok, get a drink cause this is going to be long. One message does not a paragraph make. Do you know who the man is? Was it said in a sexual overtone? If not...it's too vague and ambiguous an incident to start calling people out and saying they are homosexual. I didn't know gays had 'signs' lol! :) Ok, I am just teasing you to lighten the mood here but, the truth is, as there are no atypical straight men there are no atypical gay men. Some gay men will marry, have kids as a means of putting forward an acceptable front for moving about in the world, from both a corporate view and an private viewpoint. His family would like to have some kids and a daughter-in-law, that is the white house w/ picket fence idealism for most people. Many gay men are not the stereotypical gay male you may see on Project Runway or whatnot. I personally know a few gay men that had then not outright said 'Hey I'm gay' not even they themselves might know. They out 'man' me!! He may find it a lot easier to carry on an outward charade if he is gay then to shatter the idyllic ideas of his parents and loved ones. Handsome by the way doesn't make any one straight. I think you may actually have to do just what you say, conjure proof, as in pull it from thin air because I don't think you have anything concrete that proves his sexual orientation, and anything that argues for straight isn't proof either because this happens a lot more than people realize. Sometimes the other person in the marriage [if it gets there] is actually on-board and aware of the whole thing! This won't help but it he could just be bisexual on occasion too, which might explain how he can have sex with you [I am figuring you do or will have sex] without complication. No dead on full rudder gay man I know can even be erect near a woman. If he is gay, well, better you found out now and not 30 years later when a box of gay porn falls on the ground in the garage and spills forth with lingerie and assorted toys. And yes, that really happened to a person I know. Sorry I cannot give you a way to really learn the truth outside of direct confrontation.

Look at all the answers that were yes from the guys. It sounds like the men love the idea of the woman asking these days. I would go for it and even buy him an engagement ring when you ask him. After 3 1/2 years he should be ready for a real commitment here so do it. Please let us know how it goes and the best of luck to you.

Yes it is appropriate. & You can do what you want. If I was together with a woman for a while and she popped the question before I got a chance to I wouldn't mind much, as long as she made me feel special. :p haha

but, the guy can always propose to you after you're married so you guys can renew your vows, so you're not totally taking any thing away from him.

go for it.

Yes, it high time.He cant have his cake and eat it too. Most men like to life off the fat of the land, when the milk is free why buy the cow. You should have suggested long ago, three and a half yrs too much. You are being used and abused. If he says no or asks you to wait longer. Then dump him, get rid of him. He is not worth it.

Hell yes, this is a new day and age. I would give him some sort of necklace or jewelry piece that he would actually wear to symbolize and you get a matching piece too. I have never personally asked a guy to marry me, but I would do that.

Valentine's day almost 24 years ago, I proposed to my husband in public. He was flattered and said yes. He has always been my best friend.

Definitely not inappropriate - times have changed and we're a much more modern society. Part of feminism is believing and striving to be equal - and while your asking risks making him feel emasculated, I don't at all think it's "inappropriate". Gosh, he should be flattered!

I agree with Ida. I proposed by just saying "Why don't we get married"? He never did grow a backbone.....after 20 yrs of being together, 12 of them married.....

there is ONE DAY every four years where it is a tradition for girls to ask guys--called Sadie Hawkins Day. It is every February 29th, and the next one comes in 2008, about 4 months from now.
