The rate for online direct savings accounts ranges between 4 and 5%. Unless you're investing a ton of money choosing which bank to use should boil down to service and convenience rather than a few tenths of a percentage point on your annual yield or APR.

The major players are ING Direct, Emigrant, HSBC, and WAMU. ING and Emigrant have the advantage in that most of their business is online so they don't have the overhead of the "bricks and mortar" banks (actual banks and employees therein).

I researched this extensively and chose ING Direct. They have the best overall reviews and customer satisfaction. They are currently paying 4.3% APR. Also, their "Electric Orange" checking account has won top honors in reviews such as Kiplinger's finance.

These online direct savings accounts are a great place to park your money compared to traditional savings accounts that yield less than 1%.

Good luck saving!

speaking from experience savings account wise. My favorite so far has been www.emigrantdirect.com I started off with ING (currently at 4.30% apy) but they not only have a lower rate savings account wise for other items but they don't allow you to add a beneficiary. HSBC (currently at 4.50% apy) is nice because you can have multiple accounts with them and they give you an ATM card if you would like one. But their rate is still lower then Emigrant (currently at 4.75% apy). And if I remember correctly when I checked out citi e-savings they required you to have a checking account with them but I don't know if that's still in affect. But yeah out of all the online savings accounts I've had Emigrant has been my favorite.

PAYPAL now pays 4.94 %. As recently as three weeks ago they were paying 5.21 % and it is perfectly safe. You sign up for PAYPAL and then also their Money Market Account. NO FEES to join, no fees to transfer to or from your checking account. Transfers take 2-3 business days to complete. You can also get an ATM card to draw on your account.

Go to https://www.Paypal.Com

and follow the instructions. I have been doing this for two years now.
