My babies always did that, too. You could use the blankets that they wear (JC Penney sells them), or you could just buy the thick flannel sleepers. Good luck.

Use knitted blankets, that way no matter how many layers he gets between his face and the air on the other side of the blanket there is always a pathway for the air to get through. Or test the blanket yourself, fold it about four layers thick and see if you can breathe through it for a few minutes. If you have no problems then it won't be hard for the baby either. I don't put any blanket in the crib with my boy unless I can breathe through it without having to labor at all to get the air. I also tuck it into the crib sides but he is such a strong kicker he can usually get one side loose.
Warmer pj's, sleep bags and blankets that are fitted to fit around the bottom of the crib mattress are also ideas. Or just put a heater in his room so you can keep it warmer than the other rooms and not worry about blankets!

You should not let your son pull the blanket over his head. You never know when he'll wake up and do this in the middle of the night. The risk of SIDS is highest before 1 year of age.
If your son is cold, make sure the blankets are pushed down into the sides of the crib so that he cannot pull them up. Or you can try to wrap your son in the blankets so that he cannot pull them up from his body.
If he is rolling around and pulling the blankets up that way, you may need to dress him in a really warm bodysuit and put a blanket over him with the sides pushed down so the blanket doesn't move.

I do let my daughter sleep with a blanket. She is now 7 months old, but I've let her always sleep with a blanket. However, the only blanket I allowed her to sleep with was the one her grandma had loosely crocheted for her. That way even if she did pull it over her face, she would still be able to breathe just fine. I now let her sleep with other blankets, but she prefers the one she has always slept with! I was (still am) extremely worried about SIDS, but that blanket just gave me a piece of mind. I think if your going to let him sleep with a blanket, you should try a crocheted one at first to let him get used to sleeping with a blanket... then later on you could maybe introduce a different blanket. This really helped my fear of SIDS when it came to blankets. Hope this helps.

I let my baby sleep with a blanket, and in the middle of the night, I can hear her squirming and groaning because the blanket was over her face. I freaked out, but realized she'll wake up if she's uncomfortable. But she's within reach..not in another room. Why not purchase those sleepsacks. They are warm and reduce sids.

My son is 5 and a half months and a blanket nut. Its got to be on his cheek or by his nose and he hugs the rest of it. I lay him down and let him put himself to sleep how he likes and once hes out I take it away from his face and let him still hug it. Sometimes I take it out too once hes asleep. My doc told me not to worry about smothering at his age ,but like you I am careful and worry because he does fling it on his head and cant get it off. I have him in my room so I can watch him at night and I also give him a tiny recieving blanket which is leightweight and small.
I have had 2 blanket babies and 4 that didnt have a preference for blankies.

My son has slept with a blanket since birth. Ive never heard of not covering a baby at night. How naked and insecure that must feel to them!
I always used a thin knitted blanket tucked in at the foot of the crib, and then tucked in on the sides over baby. Eventually he got older and could pull it out, which is no big deal. Since he was about 6 months he's slept with it over his face, as thats just how he's comfortable. But he can sit and crawl, so he can certainly free himself from a baby blanket.

i dont recommend letting any baby sleep with a blanket until they are at least one year old. you can always use blanket sleepers or sleep sacks which both work really well at keeping the baby warm. but by one year the risk of SIDS is gone and they can remove the blanket alone.

My daughter is 1 and still doesn't sleep with a blanket, she moves around too much in her sleep and it can be dangerous. See http://www.ebabycentre.com/articlessafesleeping.htm on the best way to dress your baby for sleep.
