i have had it. my mothers has it regularly. she is not well and worries. you might have some worries, too. try to id the central worry, if you agree. think it through. get a tablet and pencils and think. "what am i overlooking, pushing down when something is eating me up inside. guilty conscience? bills? just free floating anxiety stemming from the workplace etc. it is not that unusual, so need not be too upset. it could be much worse. but you inner mid (sub conscious) is ringing your doorbell and waking you up. pay attention and deal with whatever it is you hate to deal with.

That has happened to me a number of times, but usually when I have taken some medication. It is distressing, but probably not anything serious at all. Most likely you are somewhat asleep, though not totally asleep, and it is like having a dream. Sometimes there are minor noises, like a pet jumping down from the chair, or the icemaker working, or something else that you cannot identify in your near-sleep state, but your brain registers and amplifies the noise, so it scares you. It would be more common if you are on medication, alcohol or drugs, sleep-deprived, or even troubled by something going on in your life. It will probably go away on its own. If it doesn't then I would see a doc and have it checked out further.

Sounds like you feel very vulnerable at night. A good therapist and medications may help.
