It got lost, but every once in a while I find it again from time to time.

Circumstantial happiness is not a permanent state of being, it's transient, and therefore one should not rely on circumstances to dictate inner happiness.
You have heard many times, I'm sure, that life is a journey not a destination? Well, that's true in the same way that happiness is not a destination either. There will be moments, maybe, months, or even years of feeling circumstantial happiness but there is no key to a permanent unshiftable sense of happiness.
If you are talking about an inner happiness that exists quite apart from circumstances I would think a Buddhist could honestly answer that question. I can't.

Within yourself. You can't go around trying to make other ppl make you happy, or you can only be happy when your doing something...
The key is basically how you view life. If u disect every bad moment, everyday will seem bad and not happy. If ur positive, and notice how great positive things are and how they overcome the negative, you can be very happy and find that "key"

"Aristotle taught that happiness is at the core of the actions we take. It is the ultimate goal every human being pursues. The actions you make are not true happiness but create and surround happiness. That is why you are at this site. Finding the key to happiness is difficult, but peel back the layers of your actions and you'll find it. It's what you peel back (the actions you take) that will determine the size of your happiness."

Joseph Campbell said it best. Humans don't long for happiness, they long for the experience of 'full aliveness.'
This 'abstract' experience is unique to each of us and is the 'truth that will set you free.' We are no more or less than WHAT we love. Pursuing our passion - what we are deadly serious about, be it large or small - is our reason for being here. Because reality is responsive to consciousness, remembering what it is, is the ONLY necessity. The kingdom of heaven is within.

All of the above offer keys, employing such as Light of Soul, divine Love, and so forth. As with all Good, the Kingdom is within, as Above, so below. However, you will do well to pick up and read, at least in Saint John's Gospel, to understand. Saint John the Beloved now teaches in the heavenworld or etheric plane over Arizona, and one may ask God, via Archangel Michael, to escort one's soul safely there, for instruction on the inner.
