I know there are 2 different mints that produce State Quarters
Why? and if you collect these quarters is one of the mints more desirable then the other?

One is in Denver and another is in Philadelphia. The reason for this is so that there is a mint "factory" both on the east and west coast. One isn't really worth anymore than the other. The east-coast collectors do have a hard time I finding the ones with "D" on it which represents Denver and vice-versa for the west coast.

Most people don't know it but there are more than just two of each state quarters. First there is the P (Philadelphia mint) and D (Denver mint) regular circulation strikes. Then there is the S (San Francisco mint) proof quarters. there is also an S proof silver quarter. So that is 4 so far. Now since 2005 the mint put out a mint set with a Satin finish, the quarters in that set are from both mints, so you have to add 2 more quarters. A complete set up to now of all the above sells for around $800.00. The mint did not make it easy or inexpensive to get all the variations they struck. A set of just one mint or just the P & D will never be worth much in your life time, or for a few generations due to the large amount struck of each. The fun is trying to find both mint marks in change and putting a set together, it is a chalange. Remember P mint mark quarters are found in the east mostly and the D out west. I live in the east and actually have found quite a few D state quarters brought in by visitors to my state. On some state quarters more were struck at one mint than the other, so one may be a little scarcer but not by a lot.

There is also a mint in San Fransisco. It make the quarters in silver. These are a more desirable because of the silver content.
