First things first: most doctors are merely upper-middle-class. Becoming a doctor takes years of hard, thankless work. While some people still do it just for the money, there are FAR easier ways of getting rich. Bankers, corporate lawyers, and generic businessmen (MBA holders) are good examples of people who do what they do just for the money.
Is it a good idea? In the long term, probably not. Working an evil job just to amass a fortune takes a psychological toll eventually. Some people can deal with that (natural-born bastards) and some cannot (the rest of us).

I think real life is a bit more complex than just choosing money or fulfillment. The choice is usually a combination of the two. I don't think there are many doctors who don't take their job seriously and are only doing it for the money, although most probably want money too.
To the extent that you can afford to do something just for fulfillment, then it is right to choose that, but sometimes you have to compromise in order to be fulfilled in other areas of life and meet financial obligations as well.

For some doctors that's true...and there are those who's life calling it is to help people.
Whether you choose a job for money or for fulfillment boils down to what your priorities in life are. If all you want is money, then you'll take a job that pays lots of money, whether or not you like it. If being happy and doing what you love is important, then you choose your job that way. Its not good or bad, it's just all based on priorities.

Ideally everyone wants to work a job that is fulfilling, but sometimes you don't have a choice and may need to take an unfulfilling job that pays more in order to provide for your family, provide health insurance etc.
