If you have ever been in cold weather your question if very important. The rear glass in many vehicles has a fine wire that weaves back and forth from top to bottom. Electric current flows through the wire when you turn on defroster. The wore heats up and thaws ice off the back window. It also helps defog the rear window (when defroster is turned on). Also, in some autos, the radio antenna way be located in a wire in the glass windshield.

That's for the rear defroster. Those black lines are wires in the windshield that carry a current through them melting the snow and ice a lot easier than scraping that whole window.

Those are defroster grids. They heat up and defrost the back glass. There are also some upper grids only on certain cars, that are actually radio antennas. Some cars use the defrost grid for radio antennas as well. Point in case is the Ford Crown Victoria. It has no visible antenna, because it uses the rear window grid.

The lines are a rear window defroster feature. The lines are hooked up electrically to your car. When turned on they heat up. This will help melt snow or get rid of fog on the glass for condensation.
