A block the the action of getting in the way of a defensive player so as to prevent that player from tackling your co-player who is carrying the ball. You are not allowed to grab the defensive player. you can knock him around with your hands/arms, but not grab hold.

The defensive player is allowed to grab hold of you ball carrier if he wants--anything he needs to do to stop him and knock him down.

One type of block you will see in football is called the legal block, often by the offensive line and defensive line. This is when the blockers use hands as sort of gates to prevent further forward motion by the opposing blocker.

You will often see a stiff-arm block by the ball carrier which is allowed in football. So called because this block prevents a tackler from tackling the ball carrier.

There are, however, several illicit blocks that can cause a football team to receive penalty yardage. They are...

Chop block---this happens when a blocker hits an opposing blocker from behind, and below the waist. Penalty is usually 15 yards for the team. Also known as a "crackback" or a "crackback infraction" (so-called because that type of block has an effect of bending one's back in an arch so quickly as if it seems that one's back had broken).

Addendum:
There is a variation of the chop block, called "clipping",
so-called when a blocker grabs the other blocker's feet
so that that blocker falls down from behind. Penalty on
either team caught with the infraction is usually 15 yards
(same penalty yardage as a crackback or chop block).

Block in the Back---Not as serious as a chop block but this infraction occurs when a blocker pushes another blocker in the back. Penalty is usually 10 yards back for the offense or 10 yards forward for the defense.

Holding--this happens when a blocker grabs another blocker, usually by their jersey. It is legal for a blocker to push both hands forward against the opposing team's blocker, but if the blocker being blocked feels like as if he is grabbed, that is holding. There are two types of holding....

Offensive holding--infraction is on the offense, and the penalty is usually 10 yards back at the spot of the infraction.

Defensive holding--infraction is on the defense, and the penalty is usually 5 yards forward and the offense gets a first down.
