I have visited Berkeley with high hopes. I love the liberal history and the history music scene. The campus was very pretty but I felt that I would be afriad to walk alone less than 1 block from the campus. The streets seemed questionable and I just didn't feel safe. I was thinking about NYU as well. I have never been and it does seem that the streets as well are going to have some shady characters. But does the amount of people make up for feeling like someone could take advantage of you???? Where do you feel most safe? And if you have attended either university what did you life/not like about it??? PLEASE ANYTHING HELPS!! COLLEGE DECISIONS AS YOU KNOW ARE SO TOUGH AS IT IS.

Berkeley is perfectly safe as long as you're not an idiot.

Just follow common sense rules: Don't wander through dark places alone at night. Don't have your valuables out an openly displayed. Don't leave your laptop unattended. Don't walk through the bushes around People's Park alone at night (this should fall under the first point, but it's Berkeley and bears emphasis).

If you don't feel safe walking home alone at night, there's Cal B-Safe officers to escort you home. 64B-SAFE is their number. Otherwise, there are campus shuttles that run at night.

To put things into perspective, I was there for 5 years without any problems. I moved to a Los Angeles suburb to attend grad school, and in 4 years here, I have been robbed 3 times. I was obviously a lot safer in Berkeley.

btw, the liberal history is just that: history. There are a lot of noisy crackpots in Berkeley, but the student body is overall pretty moderate.

I'm partial to Boston University because I'm from the area. I don't know about the cities in California but the New England area has so much to offer. If you travel north just a few hours you get great skiing in the White Mountains of NH, and West another hour and you can go to the beaches of Cape Cod.
