There would be no way a peace officer (cop) could identify the owner of a single $20 bill.. very unlikely. Put it in your pocket. Or you could take it in to the police station, register it as lost, and if no one came forward to claim it (they'd have to have a serial number), you could get it back. If you didn't come back for it, it'd go to the city or state.

Honesty should be your policy, the fact that you found it in the ATM Tray means it belongs to someone else. In legal terms, solutio indebiti which means noone should enrich oneself at the expense of others. The best move is to turn-over the $20 bill to the bank where the ATM tray belong to, no matter how it is small, it counts a fortune for a person who lost it for those who experience hardship in life.

I would say that it all depends upon what sort of ATM you found the money. If it was a machine which is not directly affiliated with a bank, then thank God for small blessings and keep the money,
However, if the ATM machine is directly affiliated with a bank, then I would notify the bank, and seek advice. Mostly likey, the bank will tell you to keep the money, given that $20.00 is such a common withdrawal amount, and no one will have reported a lost $20.00 to begin with.

You could post a notice at the gas station saying you had found some money. Post your phone # & say that they must identify how much you found & where they think they lost it! If you have even one call that meets the criteria, then you probably have found the person who lost the money. I don't think that you will have anyone able to claim it but, at least you tried! If after a week or so, no one has claimed the money, I would say it would be alright to keep it. But, at least, make an effort to get the money back to the owner!

You should report it (in writing) to the bank that owns the ATM. Let them know what you found, at what location & time. Let them handle it. If no one claims it in 180 days, it is YOURS. Keep a copy of the notice that you give to the bank.

I found two twenties once in the ATM cash dispenser. I call the bank that owned it and they told me to keep the cash and thanks for the call. Honest.
