People who weigh over 18 stone must have to eat a lot to sustain themselves. My question. Does dieting work for everyone or do some people really need surgery.? Maybe its a bit of both ?

There is a horrible condition where people just cannot stop eating, Prader-Willi Syndrome, I don't think surgery would help these people. As for the rest, I guess like everything else it is a bit of both. I would also add some 'psychiatric' help, food can be as addictive as nicotine, alcohol etc.

Great question.!
I think probably a bit of both. Each case is different I suppose.
What does't help is all the sugar packed in foods that we don't know about. Was the problem this bad years ago?
Advertising plays a big part too.I'm a size 12 and each time I see a chocolate advert,I go to the cupboard.Naughty me.:[
What I don't like though,is these people being labelled. They are the same person inside.

SEAN W.....That is not nice. Some people have medical conditions too. Please don't talk like that.
The government needs to crack down on what is actually in our foods.

Think about it.When you get to that size you need so much more just to sustain yourself it becomes a vicious circle especially as the bigger you get the less active you become and you don't burn off calories.Nightmare.I'm 9 stone.Just shifting a few pounds is hard, imagine what the prospect of shedding a few stone must be like.I'm not saying there aren't those who happily stuff themselves but weight gain can be a treadmill that's hard to get off.

Sean W: I bet your a hoot at parties.

Hon, did you know that a person can be overweight and malnourished? Yep, that is true! Not all fat people eat too much, some just the opposite. I am overweight, I weigh 160 and I am 5'2" tall, so I am just under obese, but I am malnourished. I found out that I eat too little so my metabolism slows down because it thinks I am starving, so everything I eat stays with me even when I spend hours exercising. What's a dainty eater to do? (In my case my body has gone into "starvation mode", to keep me alive), so don't automatically categorize all fat people as gluttons.

Lifestyles change as we get older, meaning we don't get the proper exercize and foods a lot of the times. There are many other reasons why some of us gain weight.

put it this way back in the 80s when bob geldolf was worrying about starving Africans you always saw malnutritioned people some were skin and bone you never saw an overweight person saying i haven't eaten for 6 weeks I'm just big boned. fatties only have themselves to blame if you eat and eat and eat you will turn into a whale **** the fatties get them to pay for surgery if they wont stop stuffing their greedy faces

It could be either one or a bit of both, or it could just be not eating the right foods.

Same argument for smokers...a person who smokes 40 a day as opposed to 60 a day. Who is to say that the 40 a day is a lot to sustain themselves??? Addiction is a disease - its much harder to reach those people whose addiction is food as it a method sustenance - smoking is not!

I'd say a bit of both but it is in *childhood* that eating habits are set so parents should be aware of that.
