the Union plan was to take Richmond, defend DC, split the Confederacy in two via the Mississipi, and enforce a naval blockade.

The Rebel plan was to defend Richmond, beat the Union army in the field thus forcing the Yankees to sue for peace and getting Foreign powers to recognize them. Gettysburg was a big gamble that could've achieved that goal.
