My husband and I bought our home about 1 and a half years ago. In our back yard we have an english walnut tree. I have no idea how to tell when the walnuts are ready. I waited until tehy fell on the ground but they arent any good by them. I just cant seem to get the right timing. They are either not done (soft) or over ready (turning black)! I would really love to enjoy our walnuts and share then with our family this year. Can someone help me??

We too have inherited a large English walnut tree and have learned over the past three years that the best time is when the outer covering turns black. Then we take the covering off, crack the nuts and dry them in the oven....250 degrees F for about an hour, stirring every 15 minutes. It gives them a very sweet and nutty flavor. Good luck!

you do not pick walnut,s . no no no never. when they get ready they will fall of the tree . put on some rubber gloves when you pick them up for the stain that is in the hull,s of the walnut,s will turn your hand,s yellow and not even color ox will bring it off, take a hammer and bust the hull and let them dry out. we have a walnut tree beside the drive way we just let them fall in the drive way and just run over them with the car pop,s them right out of the hull. hope this help,s bob

You can pick them off the ground, remove the husk and let them dry. They are soft because they haven't dried. If they are black, they probably didn't mature or may have worms. A lot of english walnuts have worms.
