I always wondered if the fact that "Dr Seuss" was born in Springfield, Tennessee might have influenced the choice of name - apart from the fact it is such a common name, like Everytown USA.
However, I can't see how it's in Illinois, because it is clearly on the coast - when they looked at themselves on the map, they seemed to be looking somewhere around North Carolina or Virginia.
Homer pointed to Illinois and Lisa says, "No dad, that's not right!"
David Silverman, the show's producer, says it is in the fictional state of North Tacoma (they use the abbreviation NT or TA in the show) - the state motto is: "Not Just Another State!"

I was under the impression that they live in Illinois, being that the name of the city they live in is Springfield. But that can be Missouri, also....
