It's about a kid name Ricky who's 18 years old who fights to lead a good life but ends up an alcholic and shooting his friend one night and now is serving a life sentence in jail.

Skid Row guitarist Dave "Snake" Sabo wrote this song after reading in a local newspaper about an 18-year-old boy who shot his friend by accident. He thought the gun wasn't loaded, and eventually ended up in prison for life.

The song is about a tough boy named Ricky who had a rough life growing up which in turn, led him down a path of distruction. He had to fight for his position which created his heart of stone. He got into drinking and became an emotionless alcoholic who always turned to the booz, which misconstrued his perception and resulted in Ricky murdering a child.
The moral of the song is that although you may of had a hard life growing up, you still are responsible for your actions. If you follow down the same road you will come to a dead end. Make good choices and live life as wisely as you can, because you can trip up and end up giving your life up.

and the whole song is building up to that anyway... He's 18 years old and has a life sentance in prison.

He grew up in a poor environment and ending up shooting a kid. He was not much more than a kid himself, 18, but now has life in prison to relive his mistake. It is not a happy song!!
