for example, if they were able to take back control of Flight 93, but no one had any pilot training, would they be able to "talk" someone through landing a jet? would they just have the person put it on autopilot and hope for the best?

thanks

If they had time , yes.
I flew a DC-10 off auto pilot once... not fun.
Most of your question you answered. But the
auto pilot can not predict variables such as wind &
weather obstacles. Not to mention terrain. SO
have ATC talk you down ... if it has happened
no ones reported it. Just in the movies. Not when it
comes to a long range piece of equipment the likes
Flt 93 were working.
Had the "let's roll " team overcome the terrorists ?
Lots of what if's. They did subdue them. Altered their course and lost their lives fighting. The plane was too low.

I have sat in the pit for dozens of take off & landings. They make it look seamless. Yet, they co-ordinate hand, feet and visual connections that takes major training. These pieces do not move easily. Trust me ATC called our Captain after my flying experience...where are you... off course... we had only crew... also alarmed as we went off auto we dove like a few...feet. Just a ferry from SFO to HNL. The controls were so rigid ... but in a stress mode people can move cars and mountains.
SO, yes if they could have they would. And protocol was in place for that but not for a suicide bomb via an aircraft at the time. That was a whole new ball game. Thanks.
