Most of the produce I find in my market here in Jacksonville, FL comes from Mexico so why don't they go home and pick the darn stuff, the price of $2 per pound of Tomatoes is unreal epically when we grow them right her in Fl...

Labour costs is just one piece of it.

The high price of oil raise prices as it costs more to fuel the farming equipment and the fuel to get the produce to market. Also the price of artificial fertilzer goes up since you need oil to make fertilizer.

If the produce is coming from outside the USA then you will continue to pay more as long as the US dollar continues to drop.

The cost of gas. Most produce you see in a supermarket doesn't come from the local farmer. Much of it comes from across the nation or even different countries. If you want tomatoes in February, the price of petroleum directly effects it.
