I'm beginning to study biology and I've been looking under microscopes and all that. I don't understand why a cell is alive..what's keeping it alive? How does it know what to do..like a mini factory..with the components working together? It seems like it has some sort of intelligence that directs it. What is keeping the cell alive?

"Know" isn't the right idea. But keep this question in mind as you study biology. Even more fascinating, you started as a single strand of DNA. At some point, as your cells are dividing, some become lung, some become arm, and some become eye. How does a dividing cell know to do that?

Nucleus might be the right answer for this. Nucleus carry essentials informations and controls the cells. Nucleus contains the information on the cell's function. It has the gene, the DNA that codes for proteins and stuff. Nucleus are very important and perhaps you should learn a bit about nucleus and its function. That's a good point to start learning about the cells. And learning about the cell's component such as the mitochondria and other organelles in it may help as well.. :)

it is very complex, too complex to begin to explain here. that's why (at my school anyways) it takes 3 quarters to finish anatomy and physiology. you will learn it all in time, and it is incredible how it all works.
I am taking microbiology now and it is really fascinating too!
