There's nothing that makes this trip very interesting, with the exception of one exit. The one for Zzyzx Road. It's probably not worth taking the exit and checking things out...but digging around the internet actually gives this little road an interesting past.

If you google the name, you'll find a little bit more history behind the old spa and current activities involving Zzyzx.
There's also the Early Man Site in Calico. Never been there so I'm not sure exactly what's to see...but it has it's own wikipedia page.

If you need to gas up along the way, definitely jump off the road in Victorville/Apple Valley and find something away from the freeway. Otherwise, try to make the 3 1/2 + hour trip non-stop and enjoy the scenery. Make sure to watch out for 'teh popo' a little bit before and after Baker.

It's been mentioned, but I would definitely stop at Calico Ghost Town near Barstow, CA. It's an authentic silver mining town from the mid 1800's, with some original buildings but otherwise faithfully re-created and well-worth a visit. We live in LA and make the trip out to Calico often-- even when we're not on the way to Vegas! It's great for both kids and grown-ups...

The old Barstow Train Station was also mentioned... it's a "tourist trap" in the WORST way... but it's so bad, it's good... if that makes sense.. lol
Something we always enjoy is the Route 66 Museum, which is also in Barstow. If you're into the "car culture" of the Mother Road -- it's worth your while. Tons of photos, memorabilia and a gift shop, natch!
Enjoy!

Absolutely nothing. We are talking about towns like Baker in California. They claim to have the worlds highest thermometer.
Barstow only exist because of a Marine base and a train intersection.
Things don't get interesting until State Line. Then there is a huge outlet mall.
I suggest you leave L.A. at four in the morning and get in Las Vegas in time for Brunch.

Sorry, there is nothing but desert. Don't get gas in Baker its very exspensive. There are no towns really on the way other then Barstow or Yermo but they are very small. They do have really good mexican food there. Amigos or Los Domigos is the best, but they are in barstow and its a pain to get on the highway if you don't know the town. We always got gas in Yermo, not to far past Barstow. After that there is nothing till Baker and then again nothing till the border. I do recommend stoping in Primm, its at the border, and go on the roller coaster. I don't remember how much it cost but it is alot of fun. Other then that just drive, the sooner you get there the funner it will be. Just remember don't get gas in Baker, take a bathroom break or get a soda, but no gas there. You will see the price if you stop and watch the cops.

It's a pretty short trip, but you can stop at Calico Ghost town. It's pretty interesting and you can have some fun there. The old train station in Barstow. There's an outlet mall between Victorville and Barstow. At the state line there in Primm, NV. There are casinos there, a roller coaster and another outlet mall. Next stop, Vegas!

The route 66 museum is in Barstow and you shold visit if time allows. It is at the old train station if this is a weekend they have a very nice flea market at the olas trains station. I did enjoy it and you can get deals.
Gas is veyr high at the two towns and then when you hit state line.Primm has outlet shopping.Good deals again.

In New Orleans you need to look on the French Quarter and Jackson sq. Cathedral. In Las Vegas, bypass see a tutor... David Copperfield is many times there and Lion King is fantastically relaxing to make certain. there is likewise a large seafood buffet on the Rio with all you are able to eat lobster tails! In la, bypass see the Hollywood sign and look on the seashores.

honest, there really isn't much to see. there IS an AWESOME place in baker that sells gyros that are so freaking good and there is a little ice cream shop somewhere near victorville with a 1950s theme that is worth stopping at for a potty-break and a malt.

there's not a darn thing to see unless you think the biggest thermometer in the world in Baker is a tourist attraction! Just stop in Victorville to gas up, get a snack and stretch your legs and continue on to LV. It's really the only thing to do!
