So I have an honest question here. I've been thinking I don't have enough modern music in my CD collection, and I wanted to fix that. I like to start with the debut album of a band when I first start buying their stuff, and the the three bands mentioned in the title seem the most intriguing to me. So who's debut album is more worth my money? I was leaning towards the Strokes because I'm in the mood for something not quite so heavy. But I figure this site was designed for this type of thing so let's let the public decide!

And feel free to recomend anything else, but I'm probably going to go with one of these three first.

As I've confessed in other answers," I dig The Strokes" however I don't own anything by White Stripes or The Hives - have only heard what they play on the radio.

I'm sure you'd really like a White Stripes album if you bought one - heck, seems everyone here adores them so how could you not; right? Now, you strike me as someone who doesn't necessarily go with the "herd mentality" so wouldn't it be more fun to go with the band barely anyone here is raving about? Just a suggestion...but what do I know, I like The Strokes : )

I'd go for the White Stripes, although their debut album (self titled) is probably fairly hard to come by these days. If i was you i would just start with White Blood Cells and go from there. I'm sure people will disagree with me, but i don't think their self titled album or their next (De Stijl) were all that great.

As someone else has already said, the Strokes first album was really good, but they've been going downhill since then.

If you want some really good new music check out Interpol. All three albums are good, but if you're in the mood for something not quite so heavy, i'd go for their first album, Turn on the Bright Lights.

If you're gettin the first album get Is This It by The Strokes, if you want the best album from the three, get De Stijl or White Blood Cells by The White Stripes. The Strokes first album is their best, but their next two are pretty good, too.

The White Stripes by a long shot, but I'm not very big on the new album, seems a little bland to me. The Strokes was okay, but didn't really strike me as a band that really has an impact, just more as a band that you can listen to if you're bored and have nothing else to do. But I haven't heard their new one, so I shouldn't judge. The Hives..... eh.....
I suggest the Shins (love this video)

I'm not really a fan of any. But, if I had to choose I would say the White Stripes. A couple of weeks ago I went to a Bob Dylan concert. Jack White came out and sung a song with Bob (Meet Me In The Morning)...he did better than I would have expected.

As far as newer music goes, I really like the Black Crowes, Wilco, The Black Keys, William Elliott Whitmore, Blackfield, Jeff Buckley, The Blue Van and Chris Whitley among a few others. Most of my music is older as well.

I like The White Stripes the most out of those three. Their music's quite good compared to a lot of stuff out there today.

The problem with the Strokes is that they're first album kicks ***, and the others aren't nearly as good, but I haven't heard much of the other two bands, other than what the radio plays.
