La Cosa Nostra (our thing) is strictly a Sicilian thing, they may have had people working for them who were not Sicilians, but as was mentioned previously, no one who wasn't a Sicilian, who didn't have a sponsor, and hadn't killed a man on the order of his "Don" would ever be a made guy.

As far as their daily life, they had particular things they did. It wasn't always killing, some would collect from the loan sharks, some would collect from the bookies, others would go and have a chat with someone who was behind on paying his protection money, others would collect that. This is for the men anyway, the women and kids were supposed to be isolated from this.

The higher up you went in the organization, the less of the leg work you had to do, usually, unless something needed the personal touch of a capo, but this was probably the exception rather than the rule.

The important thing to the top men was to be insulated from criminal activity, so it was someone told someone, who told someone, who told someone else, who went out and cut someone's throat. A terrible shock to the Don of course, how could things like this happen?

During the 20's and earlier, the mafia got their profits mostly from bootlegging. In the 20s, there weren't the 5 NY families as there were in the 50s and onwards. The big names in those days were Masseria and Maranzano...most notably their war against each other for control of the mob (AKA the Castallammarese War). The formation of the 5 families was the result of that war. The winner was Lucky Lucianno.

Al Capone was a side show in Chicago, and since he wasn't Sicilian, he was not a 'made man' in the mainstream American Mafia. Murder Incorporated also achieved notoriety during this time.

After the Commision was established, with the Boss of Bosses in the likes of Luciano, the cities in the US were divided among the various families...one family per city, with the exception of New York City with 5 families.
