Corporations are run by people - for profit. With profit, they hire more workers. That's part of the upside.
Outsourcing and exorbitant salaries regardless of performance of their upper echelons and uncontrolled importation from countries that are obviously not on a level playing field with American wage and materials expenses are parts of the down side.
It's really very complex - but supporting corporations is done through legislation that will allow them to fairly compete with American resources without making it necessary to seek out cheaper foreign materials and labor in order to stay solvent.

You lost me with "feel good stories in the press", the only good news I actually can see is how good our troops are doing and that makes me feel good.

There are too many "ifs" here for a correct answer to your question.

"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.

It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.

The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
