Eagles vs. Chicago (10/21/07). The center snapped the ball and it completely missed Brian Griese, it hit his leg (maybe). The ball rolled back and Eagles recovered it. The ref called the play a false start, not a fumble. WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?? Is this an actual rule???

Its neither a fumble or muff. when the QB is under center and the ball is hiked without contact its a false start under NFL rules. if it had contacted the QB it would have been a muff and treated as a fumble. the refs got it right

Didn't see the game, so can't say for sure, but did the penalty go against the center or someone else on the line? As far as I know, the only time a center can be called for that is if he lifts the ball up and then puts it back down before snapping it back.

If the qb is directly behind the center. And the center hikes the ball between the legs of the qb. By rule it's a false start. ONLY if the qb is in regular formation. If this happends and the qb is in shotgun formation. Than it would be a live ball.

A muffed snap is a incomplete backward pass by rule and is a live ball

In NCAA rules it is considered a muff
