Rent one of those rinse and vac machines at a local hardware store and just do it yourself. They work fairly well actually. They will also sell you the cleaning solution (soap) to use in the machines. It seems to work alright. You can pick up some stuff to mix into the rinse water that protects your carpet as well.
Ewww.... white carpet???? I'm sorry but I feel for you hon.....I have carpet in my kitchen and dining room. As soon as I can I am having a rock floor put in. It is a constant fight to keep that carpet clean.

Go ahead and hire someone. They run ads all the time...you may even find some on-line for a low price. Nothing like a Pro job.....but the same can be said for the other if it goes bad...Nothing like a big mess...moldy wet carpet...rust spots when you put your furniture back down on wet carpet.
Hire someone that does steam cleaning with no soaps to make your carpet even dirtier later on.

Rent one of those machines, and put some Simple Green in with the soap. First, use the Simple Green on spots, then use it overall. The stuff is totally amazing. I guarantee it, try it on your carpet, it gets stains out and it even took some paint stains out for me.
Simple Green, totally organic and not harmful to the environment, and the stuff works so amazingly well, I can't recommend it enough.

What material is your white carpet.
I use automatic washing powder same as i use for washing my clothes plus a little stain salts (sometimes called oxy plus) both of which i use to wash my whites. Then at regular intervals depending on how dirty the carpet gets just rub over with warm wet cloth every so often with a bowl of warm clear water.

We've had pretty good success with Oxiclean. No, really. Sometimes takes a couple of treatments, but it's been pretty good about getting spots out - we had cream carpet with kids.... never again!

Put $20 in a jar every week, and every three years take it out and buy all new carpets.
Problem solved.
