I've live in Orlando for nearly 40 years (Before Disney). This is a fine place to grow up and raise kids, but like all areas that have experienced growth there is pain. Crime is on the rise, but so is the population, the crime rate here is going down, as it is most everywhere. Like anywhere else there are good and bad places to live. As the metro area is vast and traffic bad it is important to try to live close to where you work.
It's not as cheap as it used to be. From 2001-2005 most every house doubled in value. It has settled back a bit, but a newer 3 bedroom place in the burbs is still going to set you back $250,000 to 300,000. Renting can be cheap, especially if it is a condo that no one will buy.
The beach is an easy day trip - 1 to 1.5 hour drive.

Unfortunately my hubby and I moved out of Florida when we had our first child. The schools in Orlando are graded low. My sister in law went to an over crowded school. The cost of living is high. Another reason we moved. Starter homes are over priced, compared to other cities. If you move far enough outside or Orlando, you may find cheaper. Areas which used to be the best are now becoming the run down parts, or close to some harsh areas....
Good Luck.

Orlando is not near the beach. It's a great place, but pretty land locked. You should check out areas like Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island and Melbourne if you want the East coast. Look at Bradenton, Sarasota, Venice and Ft. Myers if you want the West Coast.
As for the cost of living -- it is not cheap anywhere in Florida at the moment but it is definitely a buyer's market. Home owner's insurance and property tax, now that's another story.
Good luck and happy ever after. It's not cheap but I sure love living here.

I dont have a house so I can't tell u much about cost of living, but I DO know that houses here are more expensive than the ones in atlanta... I like orlando alot its more my atmosphere and they have more options as far as jobs go, for my field at least. I live in Jacksonville there is alot of crime here too people die or get shot everyday, and kids get kidnapped and there are lots of sex offenders in the area.. u cant let the crime scare u away you live out in LV im pretty sure its just as dangerous. you dont necessarily have to move in orlando just maybe one of the cities around it you might like better. and the beach is 1hr away either side.. tampa area or daytona/cocoa. it gets really hot in the summer so if u don't ready for it then dont move. I love the heat so im fine it.

well, I lived in LV for 9 years and moved my entire family of 3 adult daughters and 3 grandkids out of there right before the oldest was ready to start kindergarten. There was no way I was going to have him go to school there! Fortunately, the whole family felt the same way so it was easy to make a big move! We moved just outside of Nashville, TN 6 1/2 years ago and we all LOVE, love, love it! We've been to Orlando and hated it- as well as all the other parts of Florida we went through- although I can't profess to be an expert on the state. Do a lot of research, though- there are lots of wonderful places to live (Las Vegas IS NOT one of them!!!!) We live in Hendersonville, TN- 20 miles north of Nashville. It's beautiful, has great schools, lots of great amenities like shopping and restaurants, it's close to the city with all it has to offer (which is a whole lot, let me tell you!) there are great parks, great nature, lakes, beaches, good home prices still, no state taxes, etc. Maybe you should check it out! And it's not such a far way from FL if you need an ocean fix- everyone here goes to FL for vacations. Good Luck getting out of LV !!!!

A long car ride will not kill your dog. Your ex will have to make sure to drive careful (no sudden stops slinging her around in the car). Make sure to stop for frequent breaks so she can potty and stretch her legs. And he'll have to make sure to stay in dog friendly hotels so it's good to do research in advance. As far as changing Dr's goes...that can be done to. He can go by the vet and get a copy of her chart and refill any meds she’s on. Then he can find a good vet in the new area. And I would suspect that a city as big as Las Vegas has canine cardiologist there as well. Most likely they also have dog walkers and doggie day care for her if your ex needs help while he's working 10 hour days. The dog knows and loves your ex. She's familiar with riding in his car. She will have to adjust to a new environment. But she did that when one of you moved out and got a new place. If she has arthritis, the warmer weather in Cali may be easier on her old bones and joints than the Missouri winters. In the end, you just don't want your dog to move that far away. And that is completely understandable! So you are trying to justify it by claiming medical reasons. But with planning, the move should not kill your dog. And as you said, he's had her since birth. You've had her in your life for 10 years....but she's been his girl for 13. Does not mean you don't love her. Just means she's his dog and it's his choice. How about you make sure to let him know that you love her and she will always be welcome in your home. If, for some reason, it does not work out having her in Vegas, let him know she will always have a good home and good care with you. For what it's worth, I made a move with a 13+ year old dog in congestive heart failure. With planning, it can be done safely.

I am a native Central Floridian of 50 years. The cost of living has gone thru the roof and wages are very LOW so we have HIGH!!! crime. People just can not make ends meet so crime steps in. Fla schools are some of the WORSE in the nation
Then there is the HIGH taxes and house INSURANCE. If you want to live near the each on the east cost look at Georgia, the Carolinas, or Virginia,NOT Fla.

Orlando is big and crowded, but the burbs are nice and there are a lot of kids. If you are dying for Florida, check Jacksonville and the west coast too - south of Tampa. The taxes are super high there though - all over FL. Check Southern Georgia.

Imagine vegas without gambling and more humidity.
And much MUCH more crime.
There you go :)
I left Florida because crime was on the rise (and the police seemed ill equipped to handle it). As far as raising a child, I wouldn't advise anyone have a family in Orlando.

It will be almost exactly the same as living in Vegas -- extremely crowded, horrible traffic, over-developed and sprawling, inflated real estate prices, rude tourists, overpriced theme parks -- you'll hardly notice the difference, except that the humidity will be much higher.
I grew up in that area, so I can't compare it to California.
