According to Proffessor Kevin Burke of the University of Houston, the Lake Chad Basin was formed by extensional tectonic forces during the Cretaceous Period. The Lake Chad Basin is located in a tectonically active area with structural features that extend northwest to the Air Plateau and southwest towards the Benue trough, a failed arm of a triple junction.
