have a steel plate and 7 screws in my anle from a car accident

I don't believe you have to get them checked at all, unless they're giving you a big problem. My son has a titanium plate that runs from the top of his hip to his knee. It's long ( 17") and he has a whack of screws. The Dr said the chances of the screws ever backing out or breaking were extemely rare. However your ankle is much bonier and you should be able to tell right away if theres a problem.

Unless the doctor advised you otherwise, you need only get them checked if they're giving you trouble.
