I am suppose to be moving into a home as a renter in 4 weeks. the thing is is the realistate agent told me the people I am renting from want a security deposit. Which is fine, but the thing is I am giving that to them tomorrow. I was just wondering why or when am I suppose to get the keys to the house?? Shouldnt I get that when I give my money to the relater to give to the home owners? Or how does that process work?

You should get the keys around the time you move in (in 4 weeks).

You'll get the keys on the effective date of the lease. If you're scheduled to take possession in 4 weeks, that's when you'll get the keys. They're not going to give you the keys prior to the lease effective date as there may be other people living there. Then the LL needs time to make the place ready for you and that won't happen overnight.

Agreed with the previous answer. You get the keys on the move-in date. (Usually the afternoon before, actually). Has nothing to do with the deposit which only holds the apartment, and is kept for security during the length of the lease.

Do not make the deposit cash, and be sure you are making the check or money order out to a person who has proof that they are what they say they are. The oldest confidence scam in the book is collecting deposits on a property that isn't theirs to rent. So be sure you note "security deposit for(address)" on the check. Your keys are not due until the date paid rent commences.

The security holds the apartment. You get the keys on the day your lease starts. I am a 20 plus year landlord.

Your rental agreement states when your move-in date is. You get the keys when all fees are paid and all paperwork is signed.

It depends on the lease. From this point on everything depends on what is written in the lease! Don't even think that you can do something that is not written down from now on.
