For dwarves I'd recommend a gun. Dwarves get a +5 to their gun skill. Dwarves are a common choice for hunter because of this. (And in earlier patches of WoW the Dwarf starting town was VERY close to the Alliance's only auction house.)

On the other hand, you might get a really good crossbow or bow drop someday...So you best bet is to train up ALL the ranged skills (Gun, Bow, Crossbow, and Throwing.) so you can use all of them if it comes down to it.

There isn't a real difference, I think. One will probably shoot faster than the other, but the other will hit harder. It will average out to the same damage per second (DPS) either way. Higher level hunter's rarely use the 'shoot' command because they have so many ranged skills that are better. Just use the one with the better bonuses.

I say pick up the training for both, bows as well. Use whichever one is going to give you the best dps at that given moment. Right now Dwarves get a racial skill to give you +5 to you weapon skill, that doesn't mean much at the moment, just affects your chance to hit.

However with the next patch (2.3) the weapon racial abilities is being changed from +5 skill to +1% crit chance. When that happens if you had the choice between a gun and an equal crossbow, go for the gun. Plus dwarves just look better with guns.

Dwarves get a racial bonus for gun use (+5 skill), so ideally, you'll always be using a gun. The reality, however, is that guns may not drop when/where you need or want them to. To that end, it's best to train in all 3 ranged skills (gun, bow, X-bow) and keep them all moderately skilled up. That way, if a good bow or crossbow drops that outclasses your gun, you can easily swap it in, and keep up good DPS. Why gimp yourself with only one ranged weapon skill?

I believe in the fact that Paladins cannot use ranged weapons but can use some Engineer contraptions that are a bit similar to ranged weapons.
