A wise man (the late, great Rodney Dangerfield) once said that he "didn't get any respect". Surely if he had one of the many positions in the NHL that doesn't get as much publicity as deserved, I'm sure he would feel the same way. Speaking of which, what is the most thankless job in the league today?

Puck- Ha ha! Great!!!

Zap- I read about the Ducks' equipment manager being fired in the off season. To me, that is simply heartless.

Equipment managers. People think their jobs are glamorous, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

These guys hang up wet jocks at 2am in dressing rooms across North America, sharpen skates to no end, do laundry 3 times a day and get earfulls from the athletes about their gear when things don't go well on the ice.

What does an equipment manager get for his efforts even when all goes well and his team takes home the cup? Well, if you work for Randy Carlyle, you're shown the door 2 days after the season with a 'thank you for 14 years of dedicated service' speech.

The referees hands down. Perfection is expected from the refs. When they call a good game, they are invisible to fans and it was the great play of the team that won the game. If they make mistakes it's all their fault and they are awful. I guess the truth is, nobody is perfect and the refs make mistakes just like the players do.

Case and point: After the games if the home team wins, nobody is cheering the refs as they skate off. If the home team loses, sometimes the refs get the blame and are booed off the ice.

Goal judges, those guys who sit with the players in the penalty box, the time keeper, statistician, those guys who have to pick up the players' equipment (it's a team job and not a league job, I know, but it still sucks), and the Zamboni driver. All of them are hardly recognized.

Goal judges....they have to wade through irate fans if they pop the light green on a controversial score against the home team!

The guy in charge of massaging Marian Gaborik's groin - that's 100+ hours per week of dirty, dirty work that never, ever pays off.

The men who sit in the penalty box.

Though it might have its perks, those guys are unknown to everyone except those inside the organization
