I have thought about this same issue. One article I read some time ago stated that the human animal is the only animal that will intentionally act in a harmful way to itself, i.e. drinking alcohol to excess.
A show on TLC used the hypothesis that humans have both logical and emotional intelligence. It is when we let our emotional intelligence make the decision that we put ourselves in bad situations. Only after the emotion has subsided that the human realizes they made the wrong decision. The question then becomes how do we train ourselves to recognize when we are making an emotional decision and not a logical decision.
I think being creatures with emotions we will never be able to divorce ourselves from this problem. We can only hope that the emotional decisions we make only cause us minor problems.

no one wants to make any wrong choice or any wrong decisions
that is why hopefully we will learn from what ever mistakes or wrong choices we made.
