I know back in the day, you had to charge batteries on mobiles for around twenty years before they were fully charged.

I am just about to get myself a Nokia 6500 Classic. The instructions do not state to initially charge the battery for any given amount of time. All it says is that charging the battery takes 2 hours.

I am assuming this is because it has a modern-day battery and as such, does not require an intergalactic megawatt charge to get the dozy thing happy.

How long should I charge the battery for, for its FIRST initial charge (straight out of the box)?

And why do/did batteries need a 14 hour intial charge?

Thanks for your help.

Most 'modern' mobiles now come charged up ready to use straight away. You only need to charge them until the battery flashes full, which with most mobiles now, is only a couple of hours. No more "charge for 24 hours before use madam".

When you buy any new electronic device, its rechargeable battery usually already has enough power in it to last a few hours, or perhaps a day. You should never charge a phone straight out of the box; it's always best to use up the existing power stored within the new battery. Then, you should let it run completely flat and only then should you begin to charge it. The reason for doing so is because this preserves the battery life much longer. Charging a new battery when it already has some life left in it can reduce the overall lifespan of the battery, increasing the likelihood of you having to fork out for a new battery much sooner. Phone manufacturers don't like to tell you this because quite obviously they care about the most important thing, and that's profit. Plus, a 14 hour initial charge is pointless too because most phones charge up fully in less than two hours. The other 12 hours would just be a bit pointless. So, when you get your shiny new Nokia, play with it to your heart's content until the battery gets completely empty! I hope this is of some assistance to you!
