Who are the best players ever to play hockey? NHL or not, state evry position please.?

C - Either Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux, Gretzky was the great one, but Lemieux suffered through devastating injuries and cancer for a huge chunk of his career.

LW - Bobby Hull, he had the hardest shot of all time, he was once clocked at around 118 mph. A great shooter, which made him one of the greatest scorers of all time. If you count his WHA totals; he had 913 career goals.

RW - Mike Bossy, this guy was arguably the best sniper ever. His goals per game average is #1 all time in the NHL, he too had many injury problems that slowed him down to the point of him only playing 10 seasons in the NHL.

D - This is undisputable; Bobby Orr. If he had two good knees, there's no telling what he could have done. I don't think there will ever be a player as dominant at the D position as he was.

G - Almost everyone here will disagree with me on this one, but I think that Patrick Roy was the greatest goalie of all time. I'm not saying that because he holds the win record, I'm saying that because I watched him play, I've seen the saves he made, and I think he's the best. He has three Conn Smythe trophies, the most all time. He is the sole reason that the Canadiens won their last 2 Stanley Cups, and he's the sole reason the Avs won their last 2 Stanley Cups. I know LITY, I need to watch some Plante video, but how am I going to get my hands on that? And even if I did, I don't think I would change my mind. In my opinion, Roy was the greatest, hands down.

Wow, I'm surprised no one has answered this question seriously. I would have thought LITY would give you a whole page of an answer describing the rich history of great players and such and such lol.

dtet03: Yeah, Richard and Howe were great players, but I really like players who had injuries slow them down, like Bossy. I think they don't get enough respect.

The previous answer was closest but Mike Bossy doesn't belong on the list of right wingers, he couldn't carry Rocket Richard's jock strap. (there IS a reason the award for goal scoring is named the Richard award afterall)

C - Lemieux (or Gretzky) both are clearly acceptable
RW - Richard
LW - Bobby Hull is as good as anyone else
D - (offensive) Orr
D - (defensive) Doug Harvey
G - Roy's as good an answer as any others. Dryden or Plante also have strong claims to be made there.

Mike's list is good, I'm not even going to argue with his goalie pick for the sake of not wanting to argue, but I will point one thing out.....Patrick Roy is NOT the sole reason the Av's won their two cups. He had excellent teams in front of him those two years, and every other year he played there. IM(unbiased)O, their skill and depth could only be rivaled by Detroit for the better part of a decade.

Rocket Richard....and I'm a die-hard Leafs fan. He could do it ALL. The key word is ALL...score, check, lead, fight, throw a nice elbow, skate, carry the puck, stickhandle.
Gordie Howe is a close second but didn't have the speed of the Rocket.

The best right winger was undoubtedly me...............but Billy Reay never saw it the same way. Thank God for CME though, he knows the immense talent I once was!
