I have this black top hat that's 100% polyester, and I need to color it green, so it'd look like the hat the Mad Hatter wears from Alice in Wonderland. I got it from a costume store, so it's not exactly a real top hat. Does anyone know what I could do? I was thinking about using regular spray paint, but it's the only hat I saw in the store, so I can't just buy another one if I mess it up.

Take fabric paint and start with the brim and work your way up the hat . Make sure there are no unpainted spots. You can get the unwashable paint from michels or somthing. Then take a purple ribbon and put it were the brim reaches the top part of the hat, put a sunflower there. Do all of this with super glue (accept for te paint of course)

From my favorite cleaning Book. Hats: Cool water and shampoo work well on nylon or knit caps. Add a few drops of hair conditioner to the rinse water to soften and condition the fibers.. This also work for toques as well. I am tell you right now if there are any colors on your hat, did not and i mean did not wash it in warm water... my bf washes his hats in the shower and now his favorite Chevy hat that was red and white is now red and pink, the color will run and the hat will never look the same again.

No paint or stain will stick to polyester real well. Go ahead and spray paint it. It will look OK for the night, but that is about it.

In order to paint it, you'd probably have to paint it white, and then green. But you could glue green fabric all over it, or even feathers.
