You can't use condescended quite like that. You have to use "to". "The man was condescending to me when he asked about mny college degree, then he smirked when I told him that I was only in community college." Hope this helps

The man thought I had a college degree but was surprised to find out that I am attending a community college.
I took an english class where the best advice I got from a teacher was not to use big words. I looked up condescended and it meant to lower one's self to another's level. I don't really understand how that would work in this sentence other than he thought he was on the same level as you.
Also remember to write in present tense during essays.

It makes sense but it is a really awkward sentence. I m not sure if can use condescend in that way like as an Action done to you. I would prolly re-write it one of these ways:
The man was very condescending to me when he asked about my degree and then smirked upon hearing that I was only in community college.
The man patronized me when he asked about my degree and then smirked upon hearing that I was only in community college.

There's a verb confusion within your sentence.
I felt condescended when the man asked about my college degree, and then smirked when I told him that I was only in community college.

This is how I would roll:
The man inquired about my degree, then smirked condescendingly when I told him I was only in community college.
