Probably Thriller/Crime. Patterson, Koontz, Connelly, De Mille, Silva, Brown, Berry, et al seem to be leading the pack. According to the NY Times, Ken Follet is on top this week. According to Library Journal's most updated figures - 2005 - it was mystery. Mystery and thriller have kind of become one genre.

In my opinion Fantasy is the best top seller. The author Terry Brooks best selling fantasy work of the Shannara series, each book has been #1 on the NY Times best selling list since his first book The Sword of Shannara which was released back in 1978, the most recent was just released August of 2007.

50% of the publishing industry is tied up publishing romance. That's not just 50% of book publishers, but includes magazine publishers, technical writers, screenwriters, etc. Romance is easily the bestselling genre today.
The second leading genre is actually how-to books and self-help nonfiction.

Romance and Fantasy seem to be the leading genres of today. After the Harry Potter phenomena, people have really gotten into the world of Fantasy. As for Romance, it will forever be a classic genre for books.

Well, I observe books and from what I have seen, its usually the thriller books. You can check amazon to see which books sell the best.

I think fiction is most popular. Fantasy fiction and realistic fiction.
