"Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."
An amazing moment when I heard it that day in July.

I believe Jason T is right. There was some "Techno babble" before the offical quotation "Tranquilty base her the Eagle has landed". I like better the Charles Duke line "You got a whole load of folk about to turn blue" That probably sums up the whole thing a lot better. I was 11 andthat's how I remember feeling watching on TV.

PS

acording to Buzz Aldrin's biog that's the first ting he did!

The first word spoken by Neil Armstrong after landing was "Shutdown".
Buzz Aldrin actually got the first words in - "Contact Light" just as they touched down.

'Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed,' is the phrase most often credited with being the first spoken on landing. However, since they were flying a very technically complex vehicle there was actually some tech talk immediately on landing that preceded that famous announcement, as the crew went through the shutdown procedure for the LM. It went:

ALDRIN: Contact light [referring to a light that went on when probes under the footpads touched the lunar surface)

ARMSTRONG: Shutdown.

ALDRIN: OK, engine stop. ACA out of detent.

ARMSTRONG: Out of detent. Auto.

ALDRIN: Mode control, both auto. Descent engine command override off. Engine arm off. 413 is in.

DUKE (in Mission Control, Houston): We copy you down, Eagle.

ARMSTRONG: Engine arm is off. Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.

DUKE: Roger Twan- Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of people about to turn blue, we're breathing again. Thanks a lot.

So actually Armstrong said quite bit before his famous announcement.

[Edited to express my disbelief that so many people apparently can't read the word that was capitalised in the question and insist on giving Armstrong's first words when he SET FOOT on the Moon instead...]

Linda is right. Don't you hate when people answer a question without actually reading it first?
