I know lots of people that major in biology-- but why did you choose biology as your major? what makes it so great?

people say they major in biology just because they think it will help them get into med school-- but I want to know why people who genuinely want to major in biology do so.

thank you all for your time and responses!

Like any subject, the two main reasons are:

1. It's interesting. You get to understand how the world works, and possibly apply it in a practical manner. Of the sciences, right now, biology is advancing the fastest (vs. physics and chemistry), which just adds to the excitement.
2. Market forces/job market. There are plenty of biology jobs available, and biology provides such a broad education anyway that it's not hard to switch around. That said, you do need to do some education past undergrad for the better jobs, because otherwise you'll be limited to lower paying roles like technician.

Even choosing it for med school isn't that great unless you really like biology or find it really easy. It's a fact that the acceptance rate for a lot of non-bio subjects is a lot higher (like engineering). Do what you love, and your marks will come, which really is what's important for getting in to med school.

Also, I can think of a bunch of other trivial reasons that somebody might pick biology (like the skewed female:male ratio).

Why Major In Biology

Biology is one of the subjects you cant go on without.

Biology is the study of life, and therefore whether you plan to graduate as a Business or Psychology or English major, you need to take a biology course, well a science course but many chose biology as it makes it easier and interesting than chemistry.

I am majoring in Biology and the reason is because I want to go into Med school. but the reason why I major in biology is because you get to learn something more interesting facts about the existance of life and how it works.

You can be a chem, physics, even English major etc.and still end up being a doctor. For me, I have always been fascinated by the processes of life. Even after so many years it just like learning one marvel after another.

i knew by the time i was five years old. i loved looking at plants and animals, and trying to figure out their structures and what made them alive. i would pull apart poplar tree buds to see the tiny leaves inside, and pull open seeds to see the "baby" plant inside. my mom took a night classes, and i would sneak into the library and look at books about animals. my older brother bought me a little microscope when i was about 11, and it fascinated me. when i was in grad school i decided i wanted to be an employed biologist, so i went into clinical laboratory medicine.

One simple reason: because we wanna know how our body works! I mean, we should know how our body functions, right? Afterall, that is our body! And biology is complex, yet interesting
