I just reinstalled a new cd-rom on a compaq for the exact same reason. Compaq's cd/dvd drives are horrible. They fail quickly and need replaced within a year. More money for them.

Have you tried playing them on different programs such as
WMP, Real Player, Quick Time player, Power DVD, etc?
Have you tried Sys Restore?
Compaq or HP should have solved this problem by now.

It might be that your CD-ROM is not reading any of your cds.
