The literal chorus in R&J is the character so titled. His purpose seems somewhat altered from that of a Greek chorus for a Tragedy, as had been the whole concept of Tragedy from the Greek to the Renaissance.

what theatre doc said was pertty true, but i'd like to add that the chorous is a group of people that are not characters in the play that just come out and sing/describe acts before they happen. Usually around 5-10 people make up such a chorous.
