Me too, she is fame mad - bet she won't be writing her next book in a cafe, but she will write because she is addicted to it and the celebrity that goes with it. I work in a library and have never read a word. However, if I could write and make a few bob, then I would do it, but then I am not a good actress as well - she is. Gay, wheyhay, what the hell - just wants more publicity and sell more shitteeey books.

Simply because the Harry Potter series is the biggest thing in children's literature and literature in general. The series has sold 350-500 million copies and the movies have made around a billion dollars to date.
There is a lot of people who have invested a great deal of time, emotion and thought into Harry Potter, who care very much about JKR's world.
So, when she says anything about it, especially something as basic as the sexual orientation of a main character--it makes the news big time.

Like it or not, the Harry Potter franchise is huge and has many fans. It is the people who decide what is and isn't news and people like Harry Potter so anything to do with the novels is deemed to be of interest to the media.

I believe it it is said to be newsworthy becuase 1) J.K. Rowling said it, and 2) it will bring Harry Potter more publicity. I honestly think she's just messing with us for publicity, but it's still funny. Yeah, like he's gay! Gosh, the gullibility of the masses...pshaw!

I could not agree with you more! Our society is changing and there is an intrigue with homosexuality. Conservative types don't want to see it as an accepted behavior and moderate-liberal types don't understand how it could be considered deviant behavior. In the meantime, it's just something else for the right to get upset about. Watch. . . in less than ten years, gays and lesbians will be able to serve openly in the military and get benefits. Again, our society is changing, and I believe for the better. Until then. . . gay fictional characters will make the news, right along with Brittaney's parental skills.

Harry Potter is a phenomenon. There are obsessors everywhere. It is those people who make this information newsworthy, because they are a very large target audience.

Well, it's definitely a first to have a major character in a youth novel that's gay. And it's nice that it's not made a big deal of in the books. It's not shoved in your face, he's not portrayed as "the gay Dumbledore". He's just a man who HAPPENS to be gay. It's nice to see something that might help to promote tolerance in today's youth.

I agree with you. It should not be a big deal, but it is good to have gay characters in children's literature to teach children that it not a big deal.
