The theatre began as a religious ritual, and remains an artistic ritual with religious overtones even today. A ritual is something that is repeated in the same way over and over again. Relgious services, athletic contests, and theatrical entertainment are all rituals of our society with athletics and theatre obligated to religion for their origins.
