i saw the movie 30 days of night on friday and i was wondering if there was really 30 days of night in alaska. and then my dad told me there was also 3 months of sun or something like that.

Depends on where you are. Basically, the sun is going around near the equator and was winter comes, it gets lower and lower in the sky, just as it does in the rest of the northern hemisphere. But in Alaska and all other places that far north at some point it goes below the horizon and never comes up for many days. In the summer, there is a period when, although it gets close to the horizon, it never goes out of sight - the land of the midnight sun.

The movie is based in the city Barrow, Alaska. Barrow is at the very top of Alaska way above the arctic circle. It is the northern most city in the USA. I lived there for a little over a year. (2006) Its 24 hour darkness for about 70 days and then in the summer its about 70 days 24 hour sunlight. BTW there are no vampires just polar bears! lol

You have to be in the part of Alaska that is above the Artic Circle before you get the extended nights.

Yes, certain parts of Alaska go through periods of dark and periods of light because of their geographical location.
