I used to think people who joined Mensa and other intellegence-based organizations were unnecessarily pretentious and conceited, lacking proper modesty, but lately I'm beginning to re-think my viewpoint. After constantly dealing with morons, it might be pleasant to have dealings with people who aren't so dumb.
On the other hand Mensa members are possibly ungracious, lacking social and diplomatic skills, with sharp personalities.
There may be no winning here. If someone asks you The Meaning of Life, it could be to train tolerance for monkey-like primates creeping and climbing around, under, and over us while they shriek and poop on themselves and one another.

This is unexpected. I thought I would be attacked by primates, not supported by others like myself. Maybe there's small hope for the world yet.

Bigbird, I'm not talking about getting C's in high school classes or anything like that. Take your feelings of insecurity off your sleeve if you want to at least project an image of confidence. Take the advice. It's good advice and it's free.

Yes, god yes!!!
Being intelligent can be a horrible thing. The smarter you are, the fewer there are of people like you.
I don't know why you'd think Mensa members would lack social and domestic skills. I think the notion of a genius as a mad scientist without any ability to interact on a normal level is a myth put about by jealous imbeciles!
I've felt incredibly alienated by the way I think and the suffocating feeling of being surrounded by idiots. It sounds conceited but there it is.

I thought the same as you re: Mensa members. I was working at the Marinelife Center (mostly sea turtle rescues) on weekends supervising teenagers when I was told a Mensa group was coming for a tour and slideshow. Since no one wanted to do this for the reasons you gave, I had to step forward and volunteer. I was terrified. I was afraid to open my mouth, and they arrived and we introduced ourselves. They seemed polite enough and we went to the slideshow (again, I was terrified they would ask something I wouldn't be able to answer) and went through the slides, stopping to answer occasional questions that fortunately I was able to answer.
Then we took the tour, they watched us feed the turtles and then it was time for them to go and they were all so kind and shook my hand and stopped in the gift shop and left. The next weekend I learned they ahd called the director and raved about me and said what a great time they had and how much they had learned from ME! Can you believe that? I was floored. I had felt so intimidated and they turned out to be one of the nicest groups I ever spent time with.
I feel the Mensa people are the same wherever they are; they don't have to prove anything and they are bascially kind people who are genuinely interested in everything and everyone around them, which is probably how they got to be on that level of intelligence in the first place.
As for others being stupid, I'm afraid I have to agree!

I don't think that people are dumber, but I do think that most people don't think for themselves as much, and this presents as stupidity.
Deep down, I really do think that people are just as smart IQ-wise as they were 50 years ago, and probably a tad smarter. However, the influence of the media has, in my view, a tendency to dumb people down a bit.
I'm no sociologist, but my guess is that laziness is a contributor. People don't put the time in to investigate the how and why of things, and the simply accept the reasons that the TV gives us. This is most evident in news shows, pseudo-news shows (like right and left wing programs on TV and radio), and just everyday shows that we (as Americans, at least) watch mindlessly instead of reading, creating art, playing with the kids, yada, yada, yada.
So people need to basically wake up and elevate their brains out of the media induced fog and I would hope we would find a bunch of smart folks emerging that were hitherto disguised as stupid people.

No longer is it a mere suspicion. It has been confirmed daily by the hordes of mouth breathing cretins one encounters. Best question ever I must say!
