I don't think Phil contributed in helping these players become better.... They were really great players to start with! Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O' Neal, Kobe Bryant? They don't need improving... And that was the argument that Red Auerbach have thrown, "He has never made an effort to try things the other way around" (which is developing his players to get better). Triangle Offense was developed by Tex Winter (as pointed out by I know ball), and it's a common mistake that it has been credited to Phil Jackson just because he was Winter's head coach. So what did Phil really contributed to his teams? He has been his teams' mediator. Remember Dennis Rodman? He said the only other coach he respects is Phil... He was the only other coach to tame the erratic Dennis Rodman. What did Phil do in LA he mediated between Shaq and Kobe which he did well before their egos inflated to humongous proportions that it became uncontrollable (thus costing them the 2004 championship).

Hope this helps.

How about the triangular offense(which holds the players from being selfish) and teaches them to elevates their game to sharing. It was no couincedence that both teams won when he came.
MJ and Scottie before Phil-0rings
MJ and Scottie with Phil-6rings
shaq and kobe before phil-0rings
Shaq and Kobe with Phil-3rings
Phil with out MJ and scottie-3rings
Phil with out Kobe and shaq-6rings
*not saying he's the reason but he's definitely part of the reason of why they won(a big part)

He made them view basketball from a mental standpoint. He would add videos from old movies during film sessions, he would quote from and ask them to read certain obscure books to make them focus on basketball with a mental approach.

He also had writers and poets speak to the Bulls before playoffs game instead of former players and coaches.

He added his Zen philosophies in his gameplan so that when they ran the triangle they were more calm and mentally secure while playing on offense.

On defense, he would read old Indian proverbs to force them into a warrior's mentality to play at peak level.

Phil was unusual in his coaching approach, but he has been successful.

Tex Winter is really responsible for the triangle offense, not Phil.
