I have worked with several groups, covens, collectives, kindreds. They were great when everyone was getting along, but ego is the enemy in many of these groups. and Third degree syndrome tends to run rampant in wicca..it practically gallops... I loved every one of the groups I ever worked with, but there will always be that one special group that no matter how hard I try, I cannot re-create the feeling that I had with them, there was such an amazing synergy, my HPS was a stellar leader, very talanted in herb craft, and a cunning ritualist. She is a terrific lady, but unfortunantely I had to move 500 miles away for work, and, well, a 500 mile commute for esbats is not an option for me. I have worked with groups locally but the energy just never resonated the way the other group did. I also discovered that wicca is not really the path for me ( even though I was elevated to 2nd degree) Some intense bouts of UPG lead me to Germanic Heathenry, which is a much better fit for my personality type. I have also worked with a kindred locally, but we were small (only 3) an when one person leaves... then it is no longer a "group" So I work solitary for the moment...
The advantages of the way I choose to work is I do not have to make time commitments to a group, I can practice when I want & how I want, the disadvantage is when I do practice I do not have anyone to pass the horn too...

I'm a solitary but I do definately enjoy getting together with others for open circles and rituals. I enjoy being a solitary, it gives me the freedom to believe as I wish and to do ritual when and how I feel is best. It definately gives me a very personal experience. Being in a group has it's advantages though. It's always great to fellowship and worship with those of like mind. Also when doing magic you have the combined unique energy of those around you (which may not always be a good thing! lol). Over all choosing to work alone or in a group is up to the praticioner, neither is better and it all depends on the individual. Hope this helps!!

I have been solitary since I was 11. I also have a large coven which we talk about what we performed and then, sparks really fly when we are all together. We prefer solice due to too many minds can destroy the pot, in some cases.
I also chose solitary due to my age when I knew I was different and able to do things, most would run in fear from. Also I show people what it is like to open yourself to different possibilities, I don't go out of my way to enlighten people, but if they are interested I will show them.

OMG'S Bookworm you have "been in practice" for thirteen years & never met another trad witch? WV has lots of witches! 502 adults on witchvox alone. From Arnoldsburg to Winfield..Are you a shut in? or in a coma? ouch.
I have a wonderful group that rocks my world everytime we get together. The advantages are the increased energy to throw at our workings, and the comraderie that comes with a functioning "group mind" Our cohesion is unlike any other and it shows!

I practice solitary. It wasn't originally by choice, but there are no Traditional (non-Wiccan/pre-Gardnerian) Witches where I live--WV, part of the infamous Bible Belt. But I've seen that apparently I'm meant to be solitary, and I really don't mind, because I'm not much of a people person anyway.
The pros: I can write my own rituals and do them around my own schedule, my rules, no conflicts, no travelling, no stupid "witchier than thou" people, no fluffy bunnies, no crap--straight up 100% business.
The only con is not knowing any other Trad Witches. It would be nice to be able to have a ritual with another one, or just to get to know one.

like the massive majority of people interior of a coven, i'm the two a team and solitary worker. never had a concern with politics or team interplay in my communities. would desire to be by way of fact they don't take all comers. As area of a team, i'm never constrained to doing issues on my own, I merely do issues on my own via determination.

I go to a UU church and work with a local kindred. Heathenism is at heart social. It's hard to practice solitary and get the real feel for the faith.
