What has this humble relation of the rose family have to do with crustaceans?

It gets its name from the shape of its canopy and branching structure. It resembles the shape of a "crab" shell, which is somewhat oval and umbrella like in appearance. Believe it or not!

The trees are quite decorative, and the apples are actually edible.

They make excellent pickled apples. My grandmother used to pickle them whole, skin, stem and all. They were great.
